India is accelerating its transition to renewable energy, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirming a commitment to more than double the country’s renewable energy capacity to 500 GW. Speaking at the India Energy Week 2025 conference, Modi outlined five key pillars—resource availability, skilled workforce, economic strength, political stability, and strategic geography—to achieve this target by 2030.
The nation, now the world’s third-largest solar power generator, has already surpassed 100 GW of installed solar capacity, a 3,450% increase from 2.82 GW in 2014. This growth is driven by significant foreign investment in large-scale solar projects, boosting rural economic development and job creation. Despite coal remaining a major energy source, Modi emphasized a just transition, including cleaner coal technologies and worker retraining for renewable sectors.
The plan also targets 5 million metric tons of green hydrogen production annually by 2030 and expands natural gas infrastructure. Experts note the complexity of moving away from coal, but India’s progress aligns with its Paris Agreement goals, aiming for 50% of energy from non-fossil sources by 2030. This ambitious shift underscores India’s leadership in sustainable energy innovation.
